PAINTING

My painting practice examines an individual’s relation to their own existence – the tensions that can occur when working from personal experience, and the potential pitfalls of lengthy introspection. Working in oil on wooden panels, using a restricted palette and fluid brushstrokes, I bring these traditional and ‘painterly’ processes into conversation with processes borrowed from printmaking. Using printmaker’s gouges and woodworking chisels, I cut into the surface of my paintings in order to make visible the multiple layers of colour beneath their surfaces in order to create textures at odds with traditional painting.
