My artwork is an exploration of the perception of colour. I am interested colour theory, in the nuances of colour placement, and how the appearance of one colour can be altered by the colours surrounding it. In my painting practice I playfully examine the formal potential of colour through contrast; placing hard edges against painterly brushstrokes and transparent areas against opaque blocks. The final painting installations are made from Perspex and oil paint on wood. They evolve by building up layers of colour which protrude into a third-dimension. This Perspex becomes a lens, using colour and light to alter the appearance of the paint. The works are intended to be viewed from different perspectives, to expose how the colour changes through the different Perspex lenses. I aim to demonstrate the complexity of a seemingly simple subject, which we experience daily, often unnoticed.
